Southeast Alamance Hosts Kinston in 2A Second Round
The Southeast Alamance Stallions (11-0) are in the midst of an extraordinary second season as a varsity football program. After an 8-5 debut season in 2023 that ended in a third-round playoff loss to Clinton (42-7), the Stallions have gone undefeated in 2024, earning the #3 seed in the NCHSAA 2A playoffs. They’ll host #19 Kinston (7-4) in the second round as they look to extend their perfect run.
Offensive Firepower
Southeast Alamance boasts one of the most balanced and productive offenses in the 2A classification. The Stallions have scored 495 points this season—an average of 45 points per game. They’ve scored at least 30 points in nine of their 11 games and have found the end zone in every contest.
The ground game has been their bread and butter, with the Stallions racking up 1,992 rushing yards on 299 carries (6.7 yards per carry) and 35 rushing touchdowns. They’ve scored a rushing touchdown in every game and have tallied at least four rushing touchdowns in each of their last three outings (4, 4, 5). Ten of their 11 games have featured multiple rushing touchdowns.
The passing game has been efficient, complementing the rushing attack.
Quarterback Landon Dodson (#8, 6’0”, 185 lbs, Senior): Dodson has completed 83 of 141 pass attempts (58.9%) for 1,095 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions in 11 games. His best performance came against Bartlett Yancey, where he went 7-for-7 for 152 yards, 4 touchdowns, and no turnovers.
The Stallions have thrown for over 100 yards in four games, with a season-high 225 yards against Northwood. Southeast has thrown a touchdown pass in eight of their 11 games.
The receivers, while not posting gaudy individual stats, have contributed consistently:
Bubba Sims (#4, 5’10”, 170 lbs, Junior): Leads the team with 32 catches. While he hasn’t had a 100-yard game, his best performance was a 7-catch, 94-yard, 1-touchdown outing. He’s a physical player who thrives in contested situations.
Drew Easter (#5, 6’4”, 230 lbs, Sophomore): A talented tight end, Easter has 18 receptions for 190 yards and 4 touchdowns. He’s also been a key figure in conversions, scoring 6 of the team’s 8 successful two-point attempts.
Collectively, the receiving corps has 1,159 yards and 21 touchdowns, averaging 8 catches per game.
Dynamic Rushing Attack
The Stallions’ rushing game is powered by a pair of sophomore running backs and contributions from the quarterback:
DJ Callis (#23, 5’7”, 162 lbs): Leads the team with 101 carries for 1,021 yards, averaging an impressive 10.1 yards per carry, and has scored 14 touchdowns. Callis averages 92.8 rushing yards per game.
Daniel Bunker (#2, 5’11”, 170 lbs): Has carried the ball 91 times for 501 yards (5.5 yards per carry) and 9 touchdowns.
Suffocating Defense
Southeast Alamance’s defense has been outstanding, surrendering only 76 points across 11 games—an average of just 6.9 points per game. The unit has held opponents to one touchdown or less in 8 of their 11 games. The 21 points allowed against Heide Trask in the first round marked their highest concession of the season.
The defense thrives on creating pressure and forcing turnovers:
32.5 sacks and 75 quarterback hurries, including two games with seven sacks each.
13 interceptions, with at least one pick in 8 games.
20 pass deflections, 6 forced fumbles, and 5 blocked punts.
Key contributors include:
Aiden Pak (#44, 5’11”, 180 lbs, Junior): Leads the team in total tackles (88), anchoring the middle of the defense. Pak also had 9 TFLs and 1 interception.
Bubba Sims (#4): An all-around playmaker, Sims has been dominant on defense with 70 tackles, 11 tackles for loss (TFLs), 6 interceptions, 2 forced fumbles, and 2 fumble recovery touchdowns this season.
Career (24 games): Sims has 157 total tackles, 19 TFLs, 6 interceptions, 4.5 sacks, and 6 quarterback hurries.
Southeast has five players with at least five tackles for loss, showcasing their ability to disrupt opposing offenses.
Special Teams Efficiency
Special teams have been another strength for the Stallions.
Cruz Nelms (#6, Senior): Has converted 61 of 65 extra-point attempts and 2-of-4 field goals.
The team has also scored 6 successful two-point conversions, all credited to tight end Drew Easter.
Southeast’s punt-blocking unit has been particularly disruptive, recording 5 blocked punts this season.
Program Growth and Playoff Outlook
Southeast Alamance has made a remarkable leap in their second year of varsity football. After finishing 8-5 in 2023 and exiting the playoffs in the third round, the Stallions have gone undefeated in 2024 and secured the #3 seed in the 2A classification.
