Bethel storms back to win in the season opener
The Bethel Christian Academy Varsity Trojans staged a remarkable comeback in their first game of the season against Greenville Christian Academy, winning 8-7 in dramatic fashion. The game was played at Bethel Christian Academy's home field on Tuesday, and it was a thrilling contest from start to finish.
Despite a strong start from Bethel Christian Academy in the first inning, Greenville Christian Academy responded with a four-run fourth inning to take a commanding lead. It looked like the visitors were going to come away with a comfortable win, but the Trojans refused to give up.
Down 7-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, Bethel Christian Academy had to make a move.
"We knew we had a chance," Bethel's coach, Kenny Sutton, said. "We did not play well the first four or five innings, but we got it done when we needed to."
They managed to score five runs to even things up at 7-7, with Zach Harrison playing a key role in the comeback. Harrison stole second and third base to set up the game winning run on third. GCA would strike out a Trojans batter with the game tied and two outs. The next batter got into the box, and the GCA pitcher threw a low, fast ball that the catcher could not handle, and Zach Harrison would score the game-winning run.
"We came together in the last inning," Harrison said about his teammates. "I am proud of them."
The Trojans collected six hits in the game, with Jamey Williams and Harrison both contributing two hits each. Williams also got the win for Bethel Christian Academy, pitching one and two-thirds innings and striking out two batters. McKinnon Wade threw two-thirds of an inning in relief to help seal the victory.
For Greenville Christian Academy, Daniel Edwards, Connor Dial, Gabe Longenberger, and Eli Suggs all had RBIs in the fourth inning. However, it was not enough to secure the win, as Bethel Christian Academy's late surge proved to be too much for them to handle.
Cooper Williams started the game on the mound for the Trojans and allowed four runs over four and two-thirds innings, striking out seven batters. Ethan Parker started for Greenville Christian Academy and went five innings, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out five batters.
