23-24 Boys Basketball Preview: South Lenoir

As the South Lenoir Blue Devils embark on a new basketball season with a 4-15 record behind them, the introduction of Thomas Earp as the head coach heralds a new era for the team. With significant changes in the coaching staff and the departure of key seniors, this season is shrouded in intrigue and potential.

Coach Earp: A Legacy and a New Beginning

Inspired by his grandfather, legendary coach Bill Taylor, Thomas Earp steps into the head coach role at South Lenoir with a vision and a passion for the game. His successful tenure as an assistant coach and later as the head coach at Beulaville Elementary, where he led his teams to respectable finishes in the conference, has prepared him for this significant role at South Lenoir. This is not his first stint at South Lenoir as Earp coached under Jeremy Barnett.

Earp's Coaching Philosophy

Earp’s style is a versatile mix of "run and gun" with a readiness to switch to a more gritty, deliberate pace when needed. This approach suggests a dynamic and adaptable game plan, tailored to the strengths and challenges of the team.

Standout Player: RJ Brock

The 6’3 senior forward RJ Brock is highlighted as a key player for the Blue Devils. Described as a vocal leader, Brock's ability to score from anywhere and his preference for battling in the paint make him a player to watch this season.

This team will win if:

“If we force turnovers, win the rebound battle and capitalize on our opportunities to score,” Coach Earp

Season Goals:

”To have a winning record and make the playoffs.  Also to give the community of South Lenoir a basketball team they can be proud of on and off the court,” Coach Earp

Neuse News Sports Prediction

This season presents an opportunity for a significant transformation for the South Lenoir Boys Blue Devils. With Coach Earp's guidance and the leadership of players like RJ Brock this team is bound to improve. I think improving should be the main goal after last years struggles. The question remains who will Brock, Tanner Mentz was a reliable option at guard last season, will he grow with his opportunity? I like coach Earp, I am ready to see the Blue Devils compete. I predict a 3rd-4th place finish in the conference which is an improvement from last season.
